Objectives of the Program:

The aim of our program is to educate and train future endocrine surgeons who have excellent diagnostic and technical skills in the management of endocrinopathies. These individuals will have the skill and ability to develop a program in endocrine surgery that provides high quality education to students, residents, ancillary personnel and other physicians and that performs clinical research that will promote the highest standards of care for patients with surgical endocrine disease.

Highlights of the Fellowship:

This fellowship provides a unique opportunity to train in two very different healthcare systems that include all socioeconomic groups in our society. Both systems have high volume endocrine surgery practices with experienced faculty. The NorthShore University HealthSystem offers exposure to a robust endocrine surgery referral practice and mentorship from three established endocrine surgeons including Richard A. Prinz, David J. Winchester and Tricia A. Moo-Young. The John H. Stroger, Jr. Cook County Hospital provides care to a large underserved population in Chicago. The fellow will work with Dr. Amna Khokar. The combination of these two institutions offers the fellow experience in the diagnostic, operative and postoperative management of complex benign and malignant endocrine diseases. The fellow will become competent in the management of advanced thyroid carcinoma, Graves’ disease and thyroid nodules. The fellow will participate and provide care for a large volume of patients with both primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism. Likewise, the fellow will have direct experience in the diagnosis and management of the adrenal incidentaloma, pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma, and adrenal cortical tumors and cancers. The fellow will become proficient in the use of cervical ultrasound, fine needle aspiration of thyroid nodules and cervical lymph nodes, intraoperative laryngeal nerve monitoring, flexible laryngoscopy and minimally invasive operative techniques for parathyroid and adrenal lesions including both lateral and posterior laparoscopic approaches for adrenal tumors. The anticipated minimal case volume for a fellow is approximately 200 operative procedures with a breakdown of 110 thyroidectomies, 65 parathyroidectomies, 15 adrenalectomies, 10 lateral neck dissections, and 1 to 2 pancreatic operations. The fellow will perform well over 100 cervical ultrasounds and 45 fine needle aspiration biopsies with ultrasound guidance.

Research and Meetings:
The fellow will participate in ongoing clinical research projects as well as abstract and manuscript preparation for submission to local, regional, national, and international meetings for oral presentation. There is a dedicated biostatistician in the NorthShore Department of Surgery available for clinical and large database projects. Fellows will attend Endocrine Surgery University and the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons annual meeting. In addition to these travel, lodging, and registration will be provided for other meetings that accept the fellow’s research for presentation.

Chicago:
A year in Chicago is a culturally rich experience. The city has world class restaurants and entertainment including music, theater and sports. The city is an exciting place to call home for a year during fellowship not only for the fellow but for all members of their family.

International Medical Graduates:

International medical graduates who have completed an accredited general surgery residency and are board eligible may apply.
