The Department of Surgery at the University of Kentucky is seeking a fellowship-trained endocrine surgeon to join a high-volume endocrine surgery program. Candidates must have completed an accredited residency program, an AAES accredited endocrine surgery fellowship, and be eligible for American Board of Surgery certification. Ideal candidates will have excellent clinical and operative skills, be accomplished at ultrasound, ultrasound-guided FNA and RFA, and demonstrate a strong interest in clinical and/or basic science research. Applicants should have credentials appropriate for appointment at the Assistant Professor level though applicants with a higher academic rank are also welcome to apply. The candidate will be joining four endocrine surgeons, including the Chair of Surgery, who are dedicated to thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal surgery. The Section of Endocrine Surgery enjoys the benefits of in-office ultrasound/FNA with immediate on-site cytopathologic interpretation, intraoperative turbo PTH, option of gamma probe localization, intraoperative nerve monitoring, in-office flexible laryngoscopy, intraoperative SPY ICG, access to high quality adrenal vein sampling, and a multidisciplinary endocrine tumor board conference. The Endocrine Surgery program is based out of UK Good Samaritan Hospital, a low acuity satellite hospital located approximately one mile from the UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital. The candidate will participate in a call pool of endocrine, MIS, bariatric and general surgeons. Call covers patients on those services (with specialty back-up) as well as general surgery acute care at the Lexington VA hospital (current call frequency is 1 in 10, including approximately 6 weekends/year and one holiday). The UK general surgery residency program accepts 8 categorical residents per year. Residents spend dedicated time on endocrine surgery during the PGY3 year. The Department of Surgery is comprised of 11 Divisions with over 90 faculty of which 36% are female (64% of our residents are female). The Department currently ranks 31st in the nation among surgery departments for research funding with over $6.6 million in annual NIH research grants. Departmental strategic initiatives focus on clinical excellence, education, research, innovation, quality improvement, leadership training, global health, and wellbeing. For the last six consecutive years, US World News and Report has recognized UK Chandler Hospital as the number 1 hospital in Kentucky. The UK Health System is the largest in the state and houses the Markey Cancer Center, Kentucky’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Gill Heart & Vascular Institute, and the Kentucky Transplant Center. The University is embarking a $3.8 billion expansion of the physical plant including a state-of-the-art health education building, a new Markey cancer center, and a massive expansion of UK Chandler Hospital which will increase UKHC’s capacity from 1100 to 1400 beds.
