About Dr. Alsafran
Dr. Salman Alsafran, MD, FACS, is Chief of Endocrine Surgery at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital in Kuwait, Assistant Professor of Surgery at Kuwait University, and Program Director of the Kuwait Endocrine Surgery Fellowship—the country's first dedicated endocrine surgery fellowship. He completed his General Surgery residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital and his Endocrine Surgery Fellowship at the University of Chicago under Dr. Peter Angelos. He also completed the Global Clinical Scholars Research Training Program at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Alsafran has played a leading role in advancing endocrine surgery in Kuwait by establishing the nation's first dedicated endocrine surgery unit, developing fellowship and educational programs, and introducing innovative minimally invasive and robotic endocrine surgery techniques. His academic interests include thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and transoral endocrine surgery, with numerous peer-reviewed publications and international presentations.
Beyond his clinical and academic work, Dr. Alsafran has led multiple humanitarian surgical missions across Africa, Central Asia, and the Middle East, providing complex surgical care while mentoring local surgeons and healthcare professionals. He is passionate about surgical innovation, education, global collaboration, and improving access to high-quality endocrine surgical care.
What Do You Hope to Get Out of Your AAES Membership Experience?
My journey in endocrine surgery began during my general surgery residency at the University of Miami, where I had the privilege of being mentored by Dr. John Lew. His passion for endocrine surgery, commitment to excellence, and continued mentorship have been instrumental in shaping my career and inspiring me to pursue this highly specialized field. His guidance ultimately led me to complete my endocrine surgery fellowship at the University of Chicago under Dr. Peter Angelos, where I further developed both my clinical and academic interests in endocrine surgery.
Joining the AAES is a natural continuation of that journey. I deeply value the Association's commitment to advancing patient care, surgical innovation, education, and research. As I continue to develop endocrine surgery in Kuwait through clinical practice, fellowship training, and academic leadership, I look forward to learning from leaders in the field, contributing to scientific discussions, and building lasting collaborations with colleagues around the world.
I also hope to share our experience in establishing Kuwait's first dedicated Endocrine Surgery Unit and Fellowship, advancing minimally invasive and robotic endocrine surgery, and participating in international humanitarian surgical missions. Through the AAES, I hope not only to continue growing as an endocrine surgeon but also to contribute to the Association's mission of advancing endocrine surgery globally
