About Dr. Frédéric Mercier
Frédéric Mercier, MD, MSc, is an endocrine and oncologic surgeon with expertise in thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and neuroendocrine tumor (NET) surgery. He completed medical school and general surgery residency at the Université de Montréal, followed by a fellowship in endocrine surgery at the University of Chicago and a second fellowship in surgical oncology in Lyon, France, focused on neuroendocrine tumors and peritoneal surface malignancies.
Dr. Mercier subsequently joined the Department of Surgery at the Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM), where he developed an academic practice in endocrine and oncologic surgery and became Associate Professor of Surgery. In 2026, he returned to Lyon, where he currently practices as an endocrine and oncologic surgeon at Hôpital Privé Jean Mermoz.
His academic interests focus on endocrine surgery and neuroendocrine tumors, with particular interests in complex parathyroid and adrenal disease and the surgical management of small-bowel NETs. His research has resulted in numerous peer-reviewed publications addressing thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal surgery, as well as the multidisciplinary management of NETs and peritoneal malignancies.
Dr. Mercier has been actively involved in collaborative NET research in Canada and internationally, including the Collaborative of Surgical Teams for Neuroendocrine Tumors (CUTNETs). He has been involved with the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons since 2014 and presented at the AAES Annual Meeting during his endocrine surgery fellowship.
What Do You Hope to Get Out of Your AAES Membership Experience?
My interest in joining the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons stems from my longstanding commitment to endocrine surgery and from the important role the AAES has played throughout my professional development. My fellowship in endocrine surgery at the University of Chicago provided me with rigorous training in thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal surgery and introduced me to a collaborative academic community that has continued to influence my clinical and research career.
Since then, my career has evolved at the intersection of endocrine and oncologic surgery. After serving as an academic surgeon at the Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal, I recently returned to France, where I practice as an endocrine and oncologic surgeon at Hôpital Privé Jean Mermoz in Lyon. My academic work has included thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal disease, as well as neuroendocrine tumors, with a particular interest in complex and multidisciplinary surgical care.
Through AAES membership, I hope to remain actively connected to the North American endocrine surgery community while contributing an international perspective shaped by my clinical and academic experience in Canada, the United States, and France. I particularly value the opportunity to exchange ideas with colleagues, develop collaborative research projects, participate in educational initiatives, and remain engaged with evolving standards and innovations in endocrine surgery.
Ultimately, I see the AAES as an ideal community in which to maintain and strengthen the professional relationships that have shaped my career, while contributing my own experience in endocrine oncology, multidisciplinary care, research, and surgical education.
