Highlights of the Fellowship
(including number of cases and a description of the overall program)

To provide advanced training in Endocrine Surgery with the goals of expertise and career development. Fellows will master complex patient care issues, learn concise operative skills, develop command of the literature, and have the opportunity to perform clinical research including writing IRB-approved protocols.

We currently perform >800 endocrine operations yearly for thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and islet neoplasms using advanced minimally invasive techniques. We provide care and follow-up for large kindreds with inherited endocrine tumor syndromes. Approximate annual caseloads for our 3 endocrine surgeons include >500 thyroid operations including thyroid cancer operations and neck dissections, >200parathyroid operations including cervical block and videoassisted minimally invasive procedures, >40 adrenalectomies primarily laparoscopic, and approximately 10 islet cell pancreatic procedures.

This Fellowship is designed for those who have completed general surgery training and are BC/BE. With appointment as Instructor, the goal is to train Fellows to operate and evaluate patients independently with endocrine faculty input as needed. Fellows will perform office ultrasonography and will interact frequently with allied professionals in Nuclear Medicine, Pathology, Endocrinology and Radiology and will participate in regular multidisciplinary conferences such as Thyroid Cytology Conference, Thyroid Cancer Conference, Parathyroid Imaging Conference, Tumor Board, and Endocrinology Grand Rounds. Our 2006-7 Fellow personally performed 333 endocrine cases including neck dissection, laparoscopic adrenalectomy and videoassisted parathyroidectomy, and was first author of 2 presented papers at the AAES.
