Objectives of the Program
The Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham & Woman's Hospital are offering two one year fellowships in Endocrine Surgery. There will be a fellow chosen at each institution, where s/he will spend 10 months. For the last 2 months, the fellows will switch institutions. Candidates for the fellowship must be board-eligible graduates of a general surgery residency program. The fellowship aims to prepare a trainee for an academic surgical career devoted to the diagnosis, treatment and study of patients with endocrine surgical diseases. The program will provide intensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases, experience in a multidisciplinary approach to treatment planning, and opportunities for collaborative clinical and basic research.

Highlights of the Fellowship
The Endocrine Surgery programs at the MGH and BWH each treat more than 600 patients/year. The fellow should anticipate participation in over 300 operations, including thyroidectomy, parathyroidectomy, neck dissection, and adrenalectomy. Training will include a broad experience in complex endocrine surgery cases, including re-operative parathyroid surgery, laparoscopic adrenalectomy, and extensive neck dissections. The fellow will be an integral part of the surgical team, and will follow patients in the hospital post-operatively. S/he should expect to participate in the endocrine surgery clinics 2-3 times per week. This includes training in office-based ultrasound and U/S guided FNA techniques, as well as fiberoptic laryngoscopy. The fellow will also participate in weekly conferences devoted to Endocrine Surgery and Surgical Oncology. There will be the opportunity for the fellow to both attend and present patients at these conferences. We will also provide the opportunity for exposure to endocrinology, radiology, pathology/cytology, and nuclear medicine. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the fellow will participate in research initiatives in endocrine surgery, including ongoing studies that utilize an endocrine surgery database. We expect that the fellow will have the opportunity to present their data at national meetings and submit manuscripts to peer reviewed journals.
